I have never seen another KMM1 with this feature, and after carefully inspecting it, I am sure that this was intentional and not a defect. This model was made for the us market and uses a standard 120v us wall socket. Designed at Braun by reinhold weiss under dieter rams. The KMM1 was the first coffee grinder produced by Braun, and one of the very first electric coffee grinders built for home use.

This rare example includes a pouring spout for the coffee grounds. However, it does let coffee grounds escape when grinding. The unit powers on and grinds coffee beans without hesitation.
